Hello all - did anyone see Mountain with Griff Rhys Jones on BBC1 last night?

He was showing models made from gemstones mined in the Pennines and i'm sure one model had a stuffed Roller with it!!! I wonder where that came from!!

I did notice that. It was part of The Eggleston Spar Box.

Aparently they often used stuffed birds and feathers but as you say to see a roller was quite a surprise. Where they more common in the 19c? If not, even allowing for the popularity of taxidermy and cage birds in victorian britain, I think it would still have been a rare item of some value.
