Move nest? (1 Viewer)

Hello, we have a pair of Carolina wrens that have built a nest in a hanging planter on our front porch. They used the nest 3 times last year. They currently have babies that were hatched around May 4, so they will be fledging soon. The problem is that the porch overlooks our dogs area and when the babies fledge, they sometimes end up in the yard. Sadly, one of our dogs goes after anything that moves (he's not a bad dog, but he chases anything, including bees, butterflies, snakes, etc.). Last year he killed one of the bird babies. :( We have nowhere else to put the dogs outside. Can we move the planter about 10 feet to the end of the porch? Or will the parents abandon them if we do that? That way, if they can't quite fly on their first try, at least they will not land in the yard.
Thank you in advance.

If you move the nest / planter now there is a high chance the parents may abandon the nest or the unfledged young will "explode" out of the nest and perish. Try to leave them as they are till they naturally fledge and dissipate. Hopefully then you can move the planter out of harms way should the Wrens have a second brood. Good luck.

Welcome to Birdforum. I hope you enjoy your visits.

I agree with Pat. It is highly likely that the parents will abandon the nest if you move the planter.
