Hi All
I am new to this forum so not sure if posting it in correct place. If not please guide.
3 days back I found a baby coppersmith barbet bird in a sewage drain near my house, probably fell from nest .
I took it , gave it a bath, and tried to feed him.
It is not able to fly I noticed. It is trying to fly but due to some reason it is falling down every time. To protect, I have kept it in a cage and gave it food- banana, apple, biscuit, eggwhite and water. It is able to eat that. However after 3 days still it shows no t much growth or capability in taking flight. I am seeing in the top of head , breast and belly there is very less feather grown. I took to a vet also who found an infection under the wings and gave a spray twice a day, and a medicine - maxigro. I am giving that but no visible improvement in behavior. I am attaching few pictures and a video of it. Can someone give any kind suggestion on what to do to make it better so that it is able to fly itself. Thanks in advance. You can see the bird is weak by seeing the pictures attached. There is a lump under the throat also not sure if it's normal.

Hi ayandasgupta and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. It looks like a barbet, but I'm not sure which ones you get in your area.

We have some general guidelines here for the care of injured and baby birds.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Thanks guys for your guidance and wishes. Unfortunately the bird died yesterday morning. It has been eating properly but still was looking sick. feathers were not growing and it was not able to fly at all when I tried to put it on tree branches. Also it used to shiver all the time while sitting it seemed to be it had some neurological problem. And strange thing was the parents never came back even when I set it free on my roof , which is close to the mango tree branch (where in a hole the parents live). I think the parents also understood it had a disease from which there was no chance to recover.
Anyway I think even if it survived it could have spent it's life in cage only which I never wanted.

On a different note I am glad to be part of this forum/community. Let me know if I can help someone in anything. Thanks.

Thanks so much for letting us know - such a sad time for you.

It was so good of you to try to help this little bird; I'm just sorry it didn't work out.

Welcome aboard and I am so sorry there wasn't good results after all your care. Just know that you did your best and it's life just wasn't ready at this time.

Good attempt. I'm sure you got attached to the little guy. Sorry. I am fortunate that where I live in Sierra foothills of California that we have a huge wildlife rescue group that takes any animal you find and match it to a volunteer specialist versed in that animals care. From deer, to bats, to birds and even skunks, you name it, someone around here takes them in. Really quite nice.

Nice. In my locality, I live in Kolkata, I did not find any such group. There are veterinary doctors though but the one I took it to was more expert in handling mammals it seemed. Anyway it was too little to try more powerful medicines also I guess. Funny thing - just yesterday night in my dream I saw this bird flying quite well. :)
