Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 (4 Viewers)

I have been very pleased digiscoping with the LX3 for some months now. My primary equipment is an Orion 80ED 600mm OTA, and Baadar Hyperion eyepieces from 8mm to 24.
The LX3 digiscopes without vignetting from 37 to 60 equiv. Note that I am using a”Prime Scope and Eyepieces”, both without auxiliary zoom elements to degrade the image. With an
available Hyperion 5mm eyepiece the system would have a 35mm equivalent range of
7,200mm, more than enough maginfication.

The things I like about the camera is that the superior image quality is reflected in the digiscoping quality, it has a large 460,000 pixel LCD, auto focuses well, has extensive controls, is 260 grams light, and has a filter adapter tube that threads onto the Hyperion eyepiece top threads with a 46 to 43mm adapter ring.

One special condition that must be met is the need for a shortened adapter tube. The standard 30mm long tube must be shortened by 8mm to 22mm length accommodate the eyepieces properly. Before attaching the eyepiece the camera needs to be started and zoomed to at least 1/3 zoom so the front element pulls back. Likewise, before restarting, the eyepiece must be removed to keep the front element from snubbing into the eye-lens, causing a fault.

Other scopes used with this camera/eyepiece combination include a 10 inch dia. Newtonian Dob. and a microscope stand using a fine quality Lomo Apo Plan 4x objective.

Please see the attached image of a fawn, shot at 43 yards with the 17mm Hyperion. This image is a bit less than 50% frame. 1,300mm equiv. Gene Smith
