Large pugs with sizeable discal spots and abdominal bands are normally Freyer's Pug although I'm not 100% on this one and the other is a Bee Moth I think.
 
Thanks, Freyer's is what I thought for the reasons you mention but the reason I said I have no idea is my book says they are only normally found north to Yorkshire and Edinburgh Pug is only mentioned for Scotland and North west England and Mere's only Ireland. There's no mention of North East England for any of them.
