Record counts of Black-faced Spoonbill from Hong Kong and Taiwan (1 Viewer)

Yesterday 359 Black-faced Spoonbills were counted at Mai Po in Hong Kong and 1017 in Taiwan - both are record counts. This is hugely encouraging after news that one of the principal colonies failed this year.

It is too early to say if the population has grown - this will have to wait until the annual co-ordinated count which takes place every January and in addition to HK & Taiwan covers sites in China and Vietnam (plus the odd straggler to Thailand), but the signs are encouraging.

This is good news, Mike. Numbers at Chigu have been climbing slightly each year. Last year we were just shy of a thousand if I recall correctly.
