Redwing

Redwing is a common winter visitor in the Valley; the first arrivals usually reach us by earlier October. The earliest date being 28th September 1990 and the latest date being the 20th April 1986. My first record was on the 1st January 1979. Over the years we have had some fairly large flocks max being 1,000 birds in November 1983, 1,000 birds in January 1986 and 500 in December 1987. Numbers usually are in there hundreds. The best places to watch Redwings are the Paddocks near Swan Pool, Salter’s Lane and any of the Golf Courses.

Ring Necked Parakeet

The first documented record was in 1990 on the 27th July. Then a bird in 1998 spent five months in the area of the RSPB. A bird in August 2000, Then again a bird for one day only in December 2003. Since the first record all had been of single birds then in December 2004 a pair where seen near the RSPB. In 2005 the pair bred and raised two young the family party were seen regular at the feeding station, the following year no breeding was proved and three birds where seen on and off for most of the year. In 2007 two pairs bred and eight birds where seen in August. Eight birds again in 2011 and the max to date being 15 birds in September 2014. There are at least four breeding locations in the Valley at present, you usually hear them first with there loud screeching kee-a or kee-ak call has the birds fly over head usually quite some distances between the nesting sites.

Woodcock

The first documented record I could find where two birds roding over Sot’s Hole in 1978, most records are of single birds being accidentally flushed and taking a couple of years life expectancy off the would be flusher. The max count was four birds flushed in an extremely cold spell in the winter of 1986. Birds have bred in the Valley in 1984 at Sot’s Hole. With the increase of disturbance in the Valley future breeding seems improbable. Most of the Valley birds arrive in October and November. The best time to find Woodcock is during cold weather or even better when snow is on the ground when birds feed on or near the many small streams found in the Valley, the best sites being Hill Top, Sot’s Hole and Priory Woods.

An hour and a half mooching around both Swan Pool and Forge Mill Lake, pleasant enough in the nice weather but nothing to add to the above.....
