Hello all;

Grateful for your help again please...

Seen offshore in the Bay of Naples in September...

Many thanks in advance...

Cheers...

Agree with Jan-Paul it should be Scopoli's on range. Without a view of the hand on the underwing, and the extent of white there, it's not possible from the photo to assign specifically. Having just returned from 11 days on Menorca, I noted them all down as Scopoli's, purely on range. I'd do the same for this bird...

Many thanks for the input...

I'm confused! Is 'Scopoli's Shearwater' an updated name of 'Mediterranean Shearwater' or are they different birds, and is this bird a sub-species of Cory's?

Thanks again...

Hi!

No Mediterranean is the old name for Balearic (Puffinus mauretanicus) and Yelkouan (Puffinus yelkouan) Shearwater before they were split into two species.

Scopolis is indeed a ssp of Cory's but is also about to be split (already been by some I think).
