Two males caring for a bluebird nest! (1 Viewer)

This spring, (2021), I monitored a Western Bluebird nest box several days before fledging. It appeared that only two male bluebirds were care takers of the nest. I’d like to hear comments about that observation. There is a picture in the “Gallery” under my posts. Or search for “Speed brakes deployed”. Thanks for commenting.

I know this is an old-ish post but yes this can definitely happen! The female may have moved on to fledge another nest, or was injured or worse. Usually the '2nd' male is a fledgling from the male and female's previous brood.

I have seen this behavior with our bluebird box. I would love to band our babies for identification but am not able to get permission, I'm going to keep trying!

There's a few species that have young from previous broods helping out with the new ones.

Thanks for showing us this picture Jamulbob and for your comments too bhelmreich - may I welcome you to Birdforum from all the Staff here.
