Upton Warren (20 Viewers)

No sign of any Hawfinch so far today but warbler heaven at the Moors Pool - Chiffchaff, male and female Blackcap and most amazingly, a first winter Garden Warbler in the spindle bushes at the end of the causeway as per Des.

This is the latest ever Garden Warbler at Upton Warren, surpassing a bird that Richard Harbird had at the Flashes on the 1st November in 1987.

Garden Warbler from today thanks for the call Des

The first Bewick's Swan of the winter arrived back at WWT Slimbridge today. Hopefully further birds moving South will drop in to the Moors Pool to join the continuing exceptional numbers of Mute Swan.

The latest Garden Warblers for the West Midlands region as per "The new Birds of The West Midlands" (up to 2002) are birds in Sutton Coldfield on the 19th November (1992) and 22nd November in Acton (1975) - I haven't checked the WMBC annual reports published since that date.

17 Pochard John.:t:

Late flypast of Cormorant over the Moors at dusk, flight of 22 E>W followed by 4 (total 26): checked to see if any Cormorant on Moor pool but they had all left.

Also 700+ BH Gulls S>N over the Moors at dusk presumably heading for Bartley.

Checked BWP re Garden Warbler food: says same as Blackcap, insects followed by berries. Specifically mentions the berries of Euonymus (Spindle).

Anything in BWP on how to safely identify the eastern race woodwardi?
