Today's work party Flashes
Brilliant effirt by all 24 of the crew today..especially with the at times atrocious weather.
We completed 15 tasks today which means we have completed everything that needs to be done for the forthcoming breeding season.
The main jobs were as follows:-
1.Moving the large brash pile from the cuckoo hide to the gate. This was mostly the cuttings from the hedge laying contractor and we also cut back thick bramble clumps. This was then carried to the climbing frame border fence. Here we created a dead hedge and habitat piles. Habitat and log piles were also created vlose to the layed hedge. Clumps of thorn bushes were also left un cut.
2. The large piles of willows cut and left along the East side of the New Hen Pool complex were burned to stop them from sprouting. Which would then undo the newly opened up marshy area along the Hen brook to the Hen brook triangle.
3. Brush cut sedge in the SW corner of the 2nd Flash. This will improve views from the hide but more importantly provide open areas along the shore line for waders and duck.
4. Cut the blackthorn thicket next to the avocet hide which is rapidly growing into the fox fence and could compromise its effectiveness .
5. Cut back a section of dead overgrown hedge along the public footpath. The blackthorn/hawthorn has died off due to sprawling bramble. By cutting back the bramble and opening it up the thorns will have a chance to rejuvenate.
6. Repaired screening next to hen pool hide and made a 'no-access' gate along the side the bridge.
7. Repaired the fox fence panels along the boardwalk which had been damaged by recent winds.
We also cleared debris from the Hen brook washed down by the floods including a large Tv:eek!: repaired border fence, shored up hole next to fox fence panels which someone/some animal had been walking through.
