I have now finished collating the complete monthly lists for the reserve which produces the following results:

1. September - 185 species
2. May - 182
=3. October - 179
=3. April - 179
5. August - 167
6. November - 162
=7. June - 152
=7. July - 152
=7. March - 152
10. February - 139
11. December - 135
12. January - 130

One surprise is how well November performs overall. These totals have a different order to the average monthly totals (2013-2017) which has April top, followed by September, August, May, July then October. I have mapped the two distribution curves against each other below; the overall monthly total shows a more prominent variation.

I also have attached the complete list which throws up some oddities eg no Ringed Plover in December or January. If anyone has any additional sightings to fill in the gaps please let me have the details - in particular those who have been visiting for many a year might be able to fill in the missing months for Corn Bunting, Grey Partridge and Red-legged Partridge.

Tuesday's work party

At the MOORS Tomorrow
A few jobs are scheduled all dependant on the number of volunteers.
The bramble patch on the south bank of the Broadmeadow pool will be removed .... this will enhance the whole of the Amy's Marsh/Broadmeadow complex. The open vista will encourage waders and waterfowl to feed on the grassy zones safe from ambush .
Repairing the stock fence next to the East hide.
Installing a wooden screen on the balcony of the new hide.... this will limit the light coming into the hide when the door is opened which would flush any birds closeby.
Other tasks include coppicing willows in reeds to north of the East hide.
Retrieving the shingle collected from the SW marsh.
Checking and repairing fox fence next to east hide.
Meet at MOORS car park from 8.45.

Today's work party at MOORS

Thanks to all 23 of the team today a great amount achieved from all the sub-teams.
Andy A, Alan D, Bob O, Bobby P, Bob R, Charles, Dave H, Graham L, Ian Joh, Janet H, Jim B, Julie W, Kim W, Nick F, Paul M, Ray C, Roger S, Steve S, Steve T, Sue T, Terry W, Tony B and me. B :)B :)

Work:-
1. Screened off the back of the balcony on the new hide. This will lessen the 'rush' of light into the hide when the door is open.
2. Cleared the bramble to right of new hide approach and planted a mixture of 50 hawthorn and spindle bushes.
3. repaired stock fencing by east hide and sw marsh. The cattle arrived shortly afterwards to graze.
4. Completely cleared the whole of the Broadmeadow southern bank of rank vegetation and bramble thicket. This is part of the project to open up the lagoon, scrape and Broadmeadow to waders and wildfowl.
5. removed 200 willow saplings from within the reed bed just north of the east hide. this was the last area where Bitterns were seen regularly 3 years ago.

Thank you to Julie for the quality cake:eat:

Not a great deal of change from recent times.
There was an increase in Shoveler and they occasionally formed into their gyrating feeding groups. The blackwit moved on to feed in the North Moors west side shallows all afternoon.
