East Hide Closed

Please note that as part of the rejuvenation work to be carried out at Amy's marsh we have to have the track strengthened.
This is because heavy digging equipment has to be brought along the East side of the reserve.
The work will start at 8am WEDNESDAY 8TH August & is scheduled to finish on the evening of Friday 10th August.
Work on Amy's marsh will be carried out in Autumn let you know when we get the dates👍 john

Work part today

In the searing heat 11 of the crew carried out a few missions around the Reserve.
Repairs in the lapwing, Water rail and cuckoo hides .repairing doors, locks ect and an extension to the seat at cuckoo hide.
The Flashes hides were cleaned out.
A path along the Hen brook was cut ready for the survey's that will be carried out ahead of the rejuvenation work that will be carried out next year.
Also the reeds and vegetation in front of the Hen pool hide was cleared...channels were cut and some open areas were created. Almost immediately reed and Cetti's warblers fed in them, as well as at least 2 water rail one fresh looking juvenile.
A very small Tufted duck chick just a few days old swam alone around the pool and occasionally rested on the mud no adult tufteds were seen. A single female teal and a small mallard chick were also on the Pool. The Spotted Flycatchers were still calling mid afteroon in the silver birches on North side of Hen Pool. A willow warbler sang close by and other warblers seen were blackcap, Whitethroat, chiffchaff. A family of greenfinches and plenty of reed bunting were in the scrub close by.
On the Flashes there 80 lapwing and two water rails called from the 3rd Flash.

Bobby Potter and some of the crew had 3 hobbies on the Moors this afternoon. Plus 100's of swallows and house Martin's around Hobden Hall farm

Today 8 of us cleared ( pulled out manually) two large areas of Ragwort from the southern meadow and meadow in front of the sewage works.
While walking around the 2nd Flash we came across a couple of interesting areas.
The first was in the SW corner hidden from hide view by a swathe of sedge. This is a very wet open pool where I found last year's Spotted crake. Considering that most of the 2nd flash is dry it is reassuring that there is still some wet areas surviving. I will try and post pics later.
The other area is between the 2nd & 3rd Flash. There was historically channels connecting all 3 Flashes. In time the one between the 3rd & 2nd flash silted up and no longer flowed. This caused the 3rd Flash to expand and deepen. It was a bone of contention as to whether we should clear out the channel and let the water flow into the 2nd. The thought was it would supply enough water to prevent the 2nd flash from drying up. However today we discovered that there is a flow but it is literally drawing into the eadt side of the 2nd flash and is only creating a small damp patch & won't be solving the drought problem.

Thanks to the team today
