The birds always take centre stage at UW but over the last year many other creatures have offered fascinating opportunities....and sometimes other things took my eye. Of the thousands of shots I've taken, the majority of which are not posted here but on Flickr or Instagram..
A few at Upton which don't normally get seen by birders.

A couple of ringed gulls at Upton today:
A 1st W Herring Gull (M=T, white characters on a dark green ring), was new for the reserve. It was ringed in Worcester on 30/6/22 & this is the first subsequent sighting.
The second, an adult BHG bearing ring no. 2C20 (white on red), was first seen in the reserve on 13/11/22 and also on Boxing Day.

Small, but crucial, typo in the above. The ring number was M=Y 🤦

Great afternoon - if a little chilly!

A rather unseasonal last visit to Upton for us today, it felt more like Autumn than 31st December with the ‘warm’ temperatures and cloud bursts!

From the Hobby hide we saw: water rail, reed bunting, gadwall, shoveler, mallard, sparrowhawk and moorhen. The feeder was busy with blue tits, great tits, long tailed tits and robins. A song thrush was heard in almost spring song!

A nice variety of birds seen from the Lapwing hide included 3 common snipe, 8 curlew, lapwing, grey heron, tufted duck, common pochard, shoveler, teal, mallard, mute swan, coot and moorhen. At dusk a little egret flew over, 6 little grebe roosted together by the islands, a cettis was heard and a water rail was busy feeding along the margin. Our final sighting was a muntjac deer in front of the hide!

Thank you to all that have kept this thread updated/active, it is a useful resource to those of us who aren’t on social media etc!
