We may have a range of opinions on the usefulness of on-line petitions but I beg you to read on.

The Italian parliament is debating a bill which, if passed, could have a devatating effect on the birds in that country. LIPU, BirdLife in Italy, have an on-line petition at:

https://petizioni.lipu.it/#

The text on that page reads:

A serious attack on wild birds and nature is taking place in Italy.

Parliament is currently debating a bill (Bruzzone and others, A. C. 1548) to amend the national hunting legislation (157/1992) which, if approved, would make the already serious picture of hunting in our country even more critical.

The proposal, inter alia, provides for:

- the elimination of the closing limit of the hunting season, with the risk of authorising hunting even in February (and beyond), at the height of the birds' pre-productive migration;

- the creation of regional hunting institutes, whose opinion would replace that of Ispra, leading to even more permissive hunting calendars;

- the enactment by law of a five-year hunting calendar, which, among other things, would prevent recourse to the administrative courts in the event of unlawful forecasts;

- the practice of hunting seven days a week, with the elimination of the three-day weekly limit and the two-day hunting silence;

- the exclusion of birds used as live decoys from legal protection.

The proposed law would aggravate the situation of illegitimacy of our country, which has already suffered procedures and condemnations in hunting matters and is currently the subject of a new European complaint.

Above all, the impact on nature would be very serious, also considering the negative conservation status of 20 huntable species, the persistent scourge of poaching and the additional ecological problems that birds face.

For all this we demand:

- the withdrawal of the bill A. C. 1548 and any other similar proposal,

- concrete and effective actions for a turnaround on the protection of wild birds, the fight against poaching, a fuller protection of nature in Italy, also in implementation of Article 9 of the Constitution.

Let migratory birds live, migrate, fly in peace.

If you choose to sign the petition you will receive an email confirmation of your support and an request for financial support (of course!) but of course you may disregard that - the most important thing is the signatures which passed 17,000 is the first three days. The form is simple: Firma means "sign", Nome is your first name, cognome is your surname and email is er...

Thanks for reading this far, I hope you will support this cause and please spread the word.
