T BBC2 11.20 - 12.20 am If the Oil Runs Out This is one of those clever cocktails of fact and fiction that try to ring alarm bells about a coming disaster - in this case an imagined oil crisis in 2016 - using a mix of statistics, talking-head experts and laughably bad drama. The notional heroine is a blonde American geologist who has to decide between staying in London with her boyfriend and heading to Alaska to drill an oil well in a nature reserve (because "somebody has to keep the lights on"). To complicate matters the couple have fertility issues and while she's in Alaska, she finds she's finally pregnant. How, you may find yourself wondering, do these pointless dramatic scenes add to our understanding of global energy issues? They don't, and they're no fun to watch, either. But if the arresting statistics and relentless doom-mongering persuade us to switch off a few lights, the pain might just be worth it.

VP 141
T BBC1 8.00 - 9.00 pm Ocean Odyssey 2/2 The problem with any documentary about the ocean depths is that it's so murky, you can't tell if that's a sperm whale or an eel swimming towards you. But although the conclusion of this cGI-rich series maintains a stygian gloom throughout, it still allows us to glimpse some of the extraordinary sights down in the abyss. There are clusters of huge tube worms that, with the addition of some tissue paper and a yard of raffia, could be an ultra-modern arrangement of flowers; underwater volcanic eruptions that turn the sea bed into a massive lava lamp; and a field of steaming vents reminiscent of smoking factory chimneys in a desolate industrial landscape. The narrator dishes out impressive facts, too. "Throw a rock into the mariana Trench [the deepest location in the earth's crust] and it takes an hour to reach the bottom, 11km down," he booms.
