Memorial Day! 5/26/2014

11. The Five C's of Arizona's economy are: Cattle, Copper, Citrus, Cotton, and Climate.

Climate relates to th economy because of the tourists, or winter visitors, also known affectionately as "Snowbirds".

Yes and no and what do you grow?

It is impossible for a weed to grow in the wrong place..... that's their job to grow in precisely the right place. Such a place of course may not correspond with an individual's preferences. :-C

I realise that the OP was in reference to bare soil, and yes, covering it up with mulch will prevent weeds.... though it also confers some nett nutrient loss (those lucky Chinese!) |:D|
[...]
Most plants have trouble growing in their own residue - weeds included. They are but just bit actors making a brief cameo in a film some hours (or eons old).
[...]
Plants have ruled since the year dot ...

Have a wonderful poison (and Triffid!) free day everybody.....

Chosun :gh:

FIRST - the Chinese urgently need all the nutrients they can get. Let them have it, let's be generous! Mulch not only prevents the washing away of nutrients (poor Chinese), it effectively adds nutrients; that's the natural way, acutally. It's not the "weeds" or plants in general that add nutrients, it's the rotting plants - mulch, in the context of gardening.

SECOND - yes, gardening is about the individual preferences. If you don't care about them, let a wildernis grow, which may be good for the birds if it is big enough. If it's too small, a well planned garden may be better; for the birds and for the - admittedly - stupid and insignificant individual.

THIRD - DO YOU (or did you) actually have a garden, and what was (or is) your relation to weeds in acutal practice?

FORTH - Most plants grow very well in their own residue; that's why forests can exist for many centuries. Only a few species (like roses, for instance) are allergic to their own ancestors.

FIFTH AND LAST - (almost) every molecule of your body once was part of a plant, and (almost) every atom of your body once was part of a star. These are simple facts. Does this mean anything?

1. Mulching = good. Growing green plants (weeds or not = better!).... stops the leaching you know. Never fear though, the Chinese |:D| have a wonderful way of dealing with any excess nutrients leaching down from 'up above' - it's called agriculture and desertification :-C
2. Haven't spent a single second tending my garden in the last 15 years, nor lavished even a drop of water on it.... only problem is that it's about 100x as lush as the surrounding area and now resembles something out of Jumanji !!! :eek!:
3. Hi, my name is Chosun and I'm a Weedist ...... thankfully now reformed ......o:D
4. Actually not many plants grow well in their 'own' residue, it's only the results of biodiversity that let's forests thrive - then along comes clever man with his monocultures to bugger everything up ...... look at the enormous problems with wheat on wheat cropping --- man does not live by bread alone after all !!
5. Isn't it absolutely mind blowing :hippy: to realize that the EXACT same molecule of Nitrogen that was once (and will be once again) in a plant is the VERY SAME one that powers your body !!!!!! :cat:

Yes Raffa you're right .... nothing means anything (and everything *teehee*) at all ....... only what we ascribe to it --- life really is a figment of our imaginations ..... (o)<

That faint rustling you hear is Newton's composted body turning in his grave .... :gn:
