I would recommend, Mere-Sand's-Wood.

Habitat.
The wood at Rufford is managed by the lancashire wildlife trust, and cover's some 105 acre's. with flooded sandpits, there are extensive area's of birch & oak woodland, and plantation's of scot's pine.

Species.
Redpoll, Nuthatch, coal & willow tit's, longtailed tit's, with blackcap, chiffchaff, willow & garden warbler in summer. Linnet and Yellowhammer frequent the more open farmland, as do little owl's. Little ringed plover have bred in the pits. little and great crested grebes are breeders also. the duck list is very good at this sight.
Access.
Mere Sands Wood lies of the B5246 between rufford & holmeswood, a few mins drive from martin-mere. there are a good number of hides on this site. there is a small charge of £1 to non members of LWT. open from 9am-8pm in summer.Well worth a visit.
