Yucatan January 2017 - Birds, Bikes, and Fish (1 Viewer)

Summary and Species List

In total I saw 197 species, 16 of which were lifers (all Yucatan endemics/near-endemics or Caribbean specialties) + 17 if counting Cozumel/House Wren. I missed two Yucatan endemics, Yucatan Nightjar (not too surprising) and Orange Oriole (of all the ones to miss, that one??). Ocellated Turkey was the biggest surprise, the one I was certain I would miss, but given my brief view I will be on a mission to see it better in the future. Yucatan Poorwill was heard-only, but I count those in many cases. Gray-throated Chat was my favorite, smashing views of a bird I figured I would likely miss. Of the wintering migrants, Swainson's Warbler was the best find, a bird I've only seen well one other time.

Well this was my 8th trip to Mexico, plus I'd gotten a couple of the Yucatan endemics in Belize and have been to Costa Rica several times. But more trips to Mexico are in my future, Oaxaca is high on my must-do list!
