Identification
Length 9·5 cm (3¾ in); a tiny tinkerbird
- Glossy bluish-black crown
- Yellow throat and rump
Distribution
Coastal West Africa from Sierra Leone to Democratic Republic of Congo; also inland through southern Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo to Uganda.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- P. s. chrysopygus:
- Sierra Leone and south-eastern Guinea to southern Ghana
- P. s. flavimentum:
- Togo to southern Central African Republic, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and southern Uganda
- P. s. subsulphureus:
- Bioko Island (Gulf of Guinea)
Habitat
A variety of forest types. Primary and secondary forests and secondary growth. Submontane, riverine and forest edges.
Behaviour
Diet
They eat a variety of fruits, including figs.
