Identification
18–21 cm (7-8¼ in)
Male has a red crown and malar, which is lacking in the female
Distribution
Central and South America: found from tropical eastern Panama to northern Argentina.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 6 subspecies[1]:
- P. c. xanthochlorus
- P. c. capistratus
- P. c. paraensis
- northeast Brazil
- P. c. laemostictus
- P. c. chrysochloros
- P. c. polyzonus
- southeast Brazil (Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Minas Gerais)
Habitat
Chaco, open fields with bushes, mountain jungle.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of ants and termites. They forage singly, in pairs and in mixed species flocks.
Breeding
They nest in tree holes, though may also utilise arboreal insect nests.
