Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru.

Taxonomy

Theristicus melanopis and T. branickii (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into T. melanopis following SACC (2005).

Habitat

Temperate grassland, open country, marshland, fields or arid sandy areas.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects, molluscs, small bird chicks and small mammals.

They nest in rocky gullies, cliffs or in woodland. 2 eggs are laid and incubated by the female for 28 days.
