Identification
L 4 3/4" (12cm)
Male
- Yellow head and underparts
- Black eyeline
- Blue-gray wings, with two white wing-bars
- Undertail coverts are yellowish or white
- Olive back
Female
- Females are similar but duller.
Description
Head and underparts yellow with black lores, crown washed olive in all except adult male, undertail coverts whitish. Hind-neck and upperparts olive, wings and tail blue-gray with 2 whitish wingbars, white tail-spots.
Hybridization
Interbreeds with Golden-winged Warbler, producing two main plumage types: 'Brewster's Warbler' and 'Lawrence's Warbler'.
Distribution
Breeds eastern North America from southern Minnesota east to New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut south to [[Arkansas in the western part of its range, east across Michigan, southern Ontario, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania; winters eastern Mexico to central Panama. Rare vagrant in the west, mostly to Colorado and California.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Later successional habitats including old fields, brushy hillsides, and stream edges.
Voice
Song a rather harsh, buzzy beeee-BZZZZZ like a deep sigh.
