Identification

L 4 3/4" (12cm)

Male

  • Yellow head and underparts
  • Black eyeline
  • Blue-gray wings, with two white wing-bars
  • Undertail coverts are yellowish or white
  • Olive back

Female

  • Females are similar but duller.

Hybridization

Interbreeds with Golden-winged Warbler, producing two main plumage types: 'Brewster's Warbler' and 'Lawrence's Warbler'.

Distribution

Breeds eastern North America from southern Minnesota east to New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut south to Arkansas in the western part of its range, east across Michigan, southern Ontario, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania; winters eastern Mexico to central Panama. Rare vagrant in the west, mostly to Colorado and California.

This is a monotypic species.
