Identification
15–18·5 cm (6-7¼ in)
- Long, thin bi-coloured bill
- Steep forehead
- Streaked back
- Streaked undertail coverts
Distribution
South America: found in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina.
Taxonomy
This species has in the past been placed in genus Lepidocolaptes.
Ceara Woodcreeper has been split from Lesser Woodcreeper
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies 1:
- X. f. pintoi: Arid north-eastern Brazil in western Bahia
- X. f. tenuirostris: Coastal eastern Brazil (central Bahia to Espírito Santo north of Rio Doce)
- X. f. fuscus: South Eastern Brazil (south Goiás) to south-eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina
Habitat
They are mainly to be found in lowland rainforests and humid montane forests, but they can also be seen in a variety of woodland types.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of arthropods, particularly beetles.
