Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

Taxonomy

Some authors elevate subspecies margarettae as "Margaretta's Hermit", P. margarettae (e.g. [3]).

Subspecies

Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:

  • P. m. insolitus: Eastern Colombia to southern Venezuela and adjacent northern Brazil
  • P. m. malaris: Suriname and French Guiana to adjacent northern Brazil (Amapá)
  • P. m. margarettae: "Margaretta's Hermit". Coastal eastern Brazil (Pernambuco to Espírito Santo)
  • P. m. moorei: Eastern Colombia to eastern Ecuador and northern Peru
  • P. m. ochraceiventris: North-eastern Peru and western Brazil to lower Rio Madeira (south of the Amazon)
  • P. m. bolivianus: South-eastern Peru to Bolivia and western Brazil (to west bank of Rio Tapajós)

Habitat

Wet lowland rainforest.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of nectar and small arthropods; feeding by the trap-lining method
