Identification

Breeding male - black, fluffy yellow crown, back rump, flanks and under tail-coverts.

Distribution

Africa.

Taxonomy

Euplectes afer has three subspecies:^[1]

• E. a. afer

• Southern Mauritania to Chad, CAR, western Sudan, northern DRC and north-western Angola

• E. a. strictus

• Highlands of Ethiopia

• E. a. taha

• Southern Sudan, southern Ethiopia and Somalia to South Africa

Habitat

Lakesides and reed beds.
