Formerly placed in genus Francolinus.
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:
- P. s. squamatus: central and southeastern Nigeria east to southwestern and northern Democratic Republic of the Congo
- P. s. schuetti: southern South Sudan and western Ethiopia south to eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, western and central Kenya and Tanzania, and central Malawi
- P. s. maranensis: southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania
In addition, reference [3] recognises the following:
- P. s. usambarae
- P. s. uzungwensis
- P. s. doni
