The former species Vermiculated Screech Owl has been split[1] into three species. However, notice that the situation gets complicated by one authority[2] which has further split one subspecies (M.g. vermiculatus) and is reusing the name Vermiculated Screech Owl to indicate the resulting species:
- Middle American Screech Owl - Megascops guatemalae (Includes M.g. vermiculatus)
- Choco Screech Owl - Megascops centralis
- Foothill Screech Owl - Megascops roraimae
