Overview

Tiete ecological park (Parque Ecológico do Tietê, PET) is a large urban park in the north east of Sao Paulo city. One of its main attractions is its closeness to Garulhos International Airport. Although it is very popular, it still hosts a good selection of the commoner birds of South Eastern Brazil.

Birds

Ebird suggests around 300 species have been recorded in the park since 2018. About 120 species have been recorded in 6 or more months of the year [1].

Endemics

Birds endemic to Brazil regularly found here:
Plain Parakeet, Wing-banded Hornero, Campo Troupial (likely result of escapes), Red-cowled Cardinal (likely result of escapes), Brazilian Tanager.

Less frequently found endemics:
Rufous-headed Tanager, Pallid Spinetail, Grey-hooded Attila, Stripe-breasted Starthroat, White-throated Seedeater, Festive Coquette, Crescent-chested Puffbird.

Regional endemics

Birds in this part of Brazil and abutting neighbouring countries that are regular:
Spix's Spinetail, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Ochre-collared Piculet, Bare-throated Bellbird, Planalto Tyrannulet, Black Jacobin

Less regular:
Blacksmith Thrush, Rufous-capped Spinetail, Curl-crested Jay, Green-headed Tanager, Red-breasted Toucan, Olivaceous Elaenia, Uniform Finch, Lesser Woodcreeper, Orange-breasted Thornbird, Crested Black-Tyrant, Scale-throated Hermit, White-throated Hummingbird, Little Wood-Rail, Small-headed Elaenia, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia

Other Wildlife

Mammals

South American Coati (Nasua nasua) is common.

Site Information

History and Use

Inaugurated in 1982 to alleviate flooding, the park is administered by the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Environment (SIMA).

Areas of Interest

The park encompasses multiple recreational uses. In addition to various sports pitches and facilities, it has a museum and a 4 km passenger "train" [2].

Access and Facilities

Easily accessible from Guarulhos International Airport. Take the train 2 stops to station Engenheiro Goulart from the terminus near Terminal 1. (There is a free shuttle bus to the terminus: the fare was 4.40 R$ each way in Nov. 2023). The journey is around 20 minutes. Opening hours may be between 8 AM and 5 PM.
