South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Carduelis.

Subspecies[1]

  • S. s. spinescens (capitanea):
  • S. s. nigricauda:
  • Temperate central and western Andes of northern Colombia

A third subspecies S. s. capitanea is recognised by some aurthors[2]

Habitat

Moist montanes, high-altitude shrubland, and high-altitude grassland.
