This taxon is considered a subspecies of Black-shouldered Cicadabird by some authors[2]
Formerly placed in the genus Coracina.

There are 5 subspecies[1]:

- Luzon (northern Philippines)
- E. m. elusum:
- Mindoro (Philippines)
- E. m. ripleyi:
- Philippines (Bohol, Samar, Biliran and Leyte)
- E. m. mindanense:
- Southern Philippines (Mindanao and Basilan)
- E. m. everetti:
- Sulu Archipelago (Bongao, Jolo, Lapac and Tawitawi)

Canopy and middle storey of moist lowland secondary forests and montanes, below 1,000 m.

There is very little information available; they probably eat insects.
