Identification

  • 2-3 white wing-bars
  • Narrow white tail-tips
  • Pale blue iris

Male: black throat patch
Female: a grey scaly throat

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

There are 2 subspecies:

  • H. m. melanopogon:
  • H. m. minor: smaller than the nominate race
  • South-central Amazonian Brazil

A third subspecies occidentalis, is not recognised by all authorities[1]

Habitat

Swamps.

Behaviour

It is always found near water, hopping on logs or in low shrubs.
