Identification
20-22cm. Dull white above, white below, black crown, sides of head and tail, red around the eyes and bill, with black tip, dark iris and feet. Female - dark brown wings and tail, some brown pattern on head, back and underside.
Distribution
From Trinidad and northern South America to Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Bolivia.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized1: cayana and brazilienzis.
Habitat
Canopy and borders of humid forest and secondary woodland.
Behaviour
The diet includes mainly fruit.
They nest in holes in trees often using old woodpecker holes, lined with dry leaves and some small twigs. 3 brown-marked buff eggs are laid and incubated by the female for almost three weeks; both parents feed the chicks.
