- Pycnonotus barbatus
Identification
Only Pycnonotus bulbul in most of its range and therefore generally easily identified. The only other member of the P. barbatus complex (see taxonomy) with a whitish vent, the Somali Bulbul, has a whitish patch on the auriculars and a more scaly chest.
Distribution
It is widespread and often common in northern Africa south roughly to Congo-Brazzaville and Ethiopia, with the exception of the Sahara and other arid regions where generally absent.
Taxonomy
The Garden Bulbul is one of several species that often are considered to belong to one species, the Common Bulbul (Pycnonotus barbatus). The other species from this complex are Dodson's Bulbul, the Dark-capped Bulbul, and the Somali Bulbul. This split is mainly based on morphology, especially in colour of vent (whitish or yellow), presence/absence of a white patch on the auriculars, and exact chest pattern. They interbreed widely at most localities where they meet.
Habitat
Virtually any habitat with some trees, but generally avoid dense forest.
Behaviour
An adaptable and very bold bird which readily adapts to life alongside humans.
