- Griseotyrannus aurantioatrocristatus
Identification
Length 17cm. A mid-sized flycatcher of typical morph with drab dark plumage. Upperparts dark grey, underparts slilghtly lighter. A black cap with a hidden bright yellow patch are the most diagnostic markings for this species.
Distribution
Brazil and Bolivia to Argentina, on east slope of Andes only. During the austral winter, it migrates into the mostly western and central Amazon Basin as a non-breeding resident. It is resident southward to central latitudes of Argentina.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized in this species1: aurantioatrocristatus and pallidiventris.
G. aurantioatrocristatuswas was formerly classified, together with the Variegated Flycatcher as genus Empidonomus, but is now considered monospecific in its own genus.
Habitat
Tall, dry woods, forest edges, savannahs with trees.
Behaviour
Typical behaviour for a flycatcher - returns to a favorite perch repeatedly after sorties to collect insects.
