Garrulax maximus

Identification

30.5 - 35.5cm (11¾-14 in). A very large laughingthrush.

  • Blackish-brown crown and nape
  • Greyish mantle and neck side
  • Dark chestnut wings
  • Chestnut face
  • White spotting above

Distribution

Asia: found in the mountains of south-eastern Tibet to southern China (southern Gansu, western Sichuan and north-western Yunnan)
Locally common.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Has been treated conspecific with Spotted Laughingthrush.

Also placed in the genus Garrulax and Ianthocincla.

Habitat

Open broadleaf forest and mixed coniferous-broadleaf forest, also in bamboo scrub. Found at 2135m - 4115m.

Behaviour
