Identification
30.5 - 35.5cm (11¾-14 in). A very large laughingthrush.
- Blackish-brown crown and nape
- Greyish mantle and neck side
- Dark chestnut wings
- Chestnut face
- White spotting above
Distribution
Asia: found in the mountains of south-eastern Tibet to southern China (southern Gansu, western Sichuan and north-western Yunnan)
Locally common.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Has been treated conspecific with Spotted Laughingthrush.
Also placed in the genus Garrulax and Ianthocincla.
Habitat
Open broadleaf forest and mixed coniferous-broadleaf forest, also in bamboo scrub. Found at 2135m - 4115m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds probably on invertebrates and some vegetable matter.
Forages mostly on the ground, often together with other laughingthruses. Secretive and hard to see.
Breeding
Breedings season from May to August. The nest is a shallow cup made of small twigs and placed 1 - 2m above the ground in bamboo clump. Lays 2 eggs.
Movements
Resident species.
