Identification

18–21 cm
Male has a red crown and malar, which is lacking in the female

Distribution

Central and South America: found from tropical eastern Panama to northern Argentina.

There are 6 subspecies[1]:

  • P. c. xanthochlorus
  • P. c. capistratus
  • P. c. paraensis
  • P. c. laemostictus
  • eastern Peru and northern Bolivia east, south of the Amazon, to central Amazonian Brazil
  • P. c. chrysochloros
  • P. c. polyzonus
  • southeast Brazil (Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahia and Minas Gerais)

Habitat

Chaco, open fields with bushes, mountain jungle.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of ants and termites.
