South-east Asia: found in Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sulawesi, Moluccas

Taxonomy

Six subspecies accepted, split into five species by Clements [1]:

  • Sula Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas longirostris)
  • T. l. longirostris: Sula Islands (Taliabu, Mangole and Sanana)
  • T. l. harterti: Banggai Islands (Peleng, Banggai, Labobo and Banda)
  • Sangihe Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas platenae)
  • T. l. platenae: Sangihe Island, Sulawesi
  • Togian Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas aurea)
  • T. l. aurea: Togian Islands (off Sulawesi)
  • Halmahera Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas chloris)
  • T. l. chloris: Northern Moluccas (Morotai, Halmahera, Bacan and Kasiruta)
  • Obi Golden Bulbul (Thapsinillas lucasi)

Formerly included in Golden Bulbul together with Buru Golden Bulbul and Seram Golden Bulbul.
Clements [1] places this species in the genus Alophoixus, Howard and Moore formerly in Hypsipetes.
