Identification
17 cm (6¾ in)
- Brown crown and upperparts
- Crown and nape feathers have dark centres
- Dark patch crossing eye
- White throat
- Creamy-white underparts with darker streaks
Distribution
Africa: found in rocky bush country from extreme south-western Angola to western Namibia.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Placed in genus Melaenornis by Clements.
Habitat
Areas with little vegetation, rocky hillsides and mountains, escarpments with acacia.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of insects, particularly ants and termites with the addition of small grasshoppers.
Breeding
Their breeding season is very much linked to the rains. Generally they raise one brood, but in good years possibly two or three.
