Identification
3 feet in height. Its plumage is pale pink, on its neck and back are bright carmine streaks. There is some black in the wings. The skin round the eye is bright red, the legs are red and the bill is yellow with a black tip. Juveniles are grey.
Distribution
It breeds on the high Andean plateaux of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species1. It is related to the Chilean Flamingo and the Andean Flamingo.

Behaviour
They nest in colonies near lakes and lagoons. The nest is made of mud and is cone shaped, without a top. 1 egg is laid. The chicks learn to swim quickly.
