Primaries and secondaries but not tertials are black; this is seen in flight, and sometimes a little black can be seen in the folded wings.  The skin round the eye is bright red, the legs are red and the bill is yellow with a black tip.  Juveniles are grey.

Identification

3 feet in height. Its plumage is pale pink, on its neck and back are bright carmine streaks. Primaries and secondaries but not tertials are black; this is seen in flight, and sometimes a little black can be seen in the folded wings. The skin round the eye is bright red, the legs are red and the bill is yellow with a black tip. Juveniles are grey.

Similar species

Andean Flamingo as adult has a more extensive black tip to the bill, and the shape of the bill also differ.

Distribution

It breeds on the high Andean plateaux of Peru, Chile, Bolivia and Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species1. It is related to the Chilean Flamingo and the Andean Flamingo.

Behaviour

They nest in colonies near lakes and lagoons. The nest is made of mud and is cone shaped, without a top. 1 egg is laid. The chicks learn to swim quickly.
