Identification

110 cm long, 60-90cm tall. Grey, black crest, yellow legs.

Distribution

Disjunctly distributed in northeastern and southern Africa.

Taxonomy

Subspecies1

  • A. k. struthiunculus - Ethiopia to nw Somalia, se Sudan, ne Uganda and n Tanzania
  • A. k. kori - S Angola to Namibia, Botswana, s Zimbabwe and Mozambique

Habitat

Arid grasslands.

Behaviour

The females build a nest on the ground and incubate the eggs, foregoing eating for days. When the chicks hatch, the mother brings soft food.
