- Anisognathus lacrymosus
Identification
18cm. (7in.) A typical bright, showy Mountain-tanager. Most easily identified by yellow spots below the eyes and behind the ears. Bright mustard-yellow below, slate blue above, with fine blue edges on wing and tail.
Similar Species
Similar to Blue-winged Mountain Tanager, but the latter is a brighter lemon yellow below, and lacks the head spots. Also similar to Black-cheeked Mountain-Tanager which has different color blue on the crown and lacks the yellow spots behind the ears.
Distribution
Eastern slope of Andes between 2300 and 3200m elevation.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Nine subspecies are recognized[2]:
- A.l. pallididorsalis: Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border)
- A.l. melanops: Andes of western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida and Táchira)
- A.l. tamae: Mountains of north-central Colombia and south-western Venezuela
- A. l. yariguierum: Northern Colombia (Serranía de los Yariguíes, Santander)
- A.l. intensus: Eastern slope of Western Andes of south-western Colombia (Valle and Cauca)
- A.l. olivaceiceps: Northern part of Western and Central Andes of Colombia (south to Quindío)
- A.l. palpebrosus: Andes of south-western Colombia (Nariño) and eastern Ecuador
- A.l. caerulescens: Mountains of southern Ecuador (Loja) to northern Peru (Cajamarca, Amazonas)
- A.l. lacrymosus: Andes of central Peru (La Libertad to Junín and northern Cuzco)
Habitat
Temperate forest, borders, and woodlands.
Behaviour
Common and conspicuous; often forages in small flocks with other tanagers and mixed species low in the foliage where easily seen.
Diet
Their diet consists of fruit, berries and insects.
