Nesillas mariae

Identification

15-16 cm. A pale, greenish brush warbler with a slender bill and a medium-length tail.

  • Light greenish-olive top and side of head
  • Poorly defined buffish stripe above lores
  • Dull olive-green upperparts, brightest on uppertail-coverts
  • Dark grey-brown remiges and tail-feathers, light olive-green edged
  • Yellowish-buff underparts, paler on throat and chin and on centre of belly, with warm brown tinge on flanks and undertail-coverts and soft greyish streaks on throat and upper breast
  • Dark brown eye with narrow reddish eyering

Sexes similar, juvenile undescribed.

Similar species

Has duller and green plumage and shorter tail than Malagasy Brush Warbler.

Distribution

Endemic to Mohéli (Mwali) in the Comoros.
Restricted to a small island but still common alongside local race of Malagasy Brush Warbler.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Found in evergreen forest. Occurs above 500 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds on beetles, small ants and spiders, occasionally on seeds.
Forages on tops of bushes, in shrubs and in lower parts of trees. Usually in higher levels than Malagasy Brush Warbler.

Breeding

One nest was recorded in a mango tree, 9 m above the ground. No other information.

Movements

A sedentary species.
