Upper half of the head black; going down this color by the rear neck; rest of the face, throat and neck creamy white. Back light coffee spotted with dark brown. Chest and flanks with the same color but with smaller spots. Rear flanks with dark brown and fine transversal strips. Upper tail coverts grayish. Bill long and strong, light blue, with black line over vertex.

  • Black upper head
  • White face throat and neck
  • Pale brown back, chest and anterior flanks with dark brown spots becoming bars on the rear flanks
  • Grey upper tail-coverts
  • Light blue, relatively large bill, with a black line along the top of the upper mandible

Female is similar to male but smaller and browner.

Distribution

South America: found in central Peru and western Bolivia south to northern Chile and extreme north-west Argentina.
