The sexes are alike though the male is larger than the female. Size: 19 in.

The chest and flank are similar. The rear flanks are dark brown with transversal strops. Upper tail coverts are grey. The bill is light blue with a black line over the vertex.  It is long.

Chest and flanks with the same color but with smaller spots. Rear flanks with dark brown and fine transversal strips. Upper tail coverts grayish. In pairs, and rarely in flocks, it's an omnivorous bird, seeking its food between the floating vegetation, muddy bottom, lake and lagoon borders or in cushion peat-bogs (bofedales) in the puna zone.

Identification
