Identification
Size: 19 in. Male and female similar though male larger. The upper head is black, the face, throat and neck are white. The back is a light coffee colour with dark brown spots. The chest and flank are similar. The rear flanks are dark brown with transversal strops. Upper tail coverts are grey. The bill is light blue with a black line over the vertex. It is long.
Distribution
Central Peru and western Bolivia south to northern Chile and extreme north-west Argentina.
