Identification
13 cm
- Gray upperparts
- One white wing bar
- White underparts
- Bright red forehead, throat, and breast
- Black crown and ear patch
- White nape and rump
Distribution
North and Central America:
Breeding in the mountains of south-eastern Arizona and south-western New Mexico (United States) and north-western Mexico.
Winters south to Honduras.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Montane mixed coniferous forests (Pine-Oak usually).
Behaviour
Flicks tail sideways.
Breeding
It builds a ground nest of rootlets and grasses. The clutch consists of 3 - 4 white, marked eggs.
Vocalisation
Song: sweet-sweet-sweet-weeta-see-see-see, reminiscent of Yellow Warbler.
Call: a loud chup
