Cardellina rubrifrons

Identification

13 cm (5 in)

  • Forehead, throat, and breast bright red
  • Crown and ear patch black
  • Nape white
  • Underparts white
  • Upperparts grey
    • Wing bar white
  • Rump white

Distribution

North and Central America:
Breeding in the mountains of south-eastern Arizona and south-western New Mexico (United States) and north-western Mexico.

Winters south to Honduras.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Montane mixed coniferous forests (pine-oak usually).

Behaviour

Flicks tail sideways.

Breeding

It builds a ground nest of rootlets and grasses. The clutch consists of 3 - 4 white, marked eggs.

Vocalisation

Song: sweet-sweet-sweet-weeta-see-see-see, reminiscent of Yellow Warbler.
Call: a loud chup
