Identification
The head and body is a vivid red and the wings are red with blue and black streaks The primaries are black with blue coverts; blue coverts under the tail. Its beak is orange and its eyes are orange rimmed in red. Its legs are a dark grey. Its voice is a loud, piercing whistles and metallic pings to soft, high-pitched warbles and chattering.

Behaviour
The diet includes nectar, pollen, fruits, and the occasional insect. Their tongue is specially adapted with a tip made of elongated papillae which enables them to collect pollen from flowers.
It nests in tree hollows, and the breeding season is November to February.
